One of the biggest pop sensations of the year, La Roux is to write songs for some of her competitors, the singer has claimed.
Beginning with her debut single ‘Quicksand’ last year, La Roux has barely put a foot wrong. Praised by critics the flame haired singer released her new track ‘In For The Kill’ earlier this year, but met a stone wall of silence from radio chiefs.
Creeping up the charts via word of mouth hype and dancefloor abandon, the song has become one of the year’s defining tracks thus far. Buoyed by Skream’s ceiling raising dubstep reworking, the song has become about as inescapable as Spring rain.
The song eventually peaked at number two, just missing out on the pole position by a few thousands sales. However ‘In For The Kill’ is still lingering around the Top Ten, and has established La Roux as a major new artist.
With her debut album due for release later this year, and a lengthy tour over the summer, La Roux is a star in the making.
However the singer could be due for a step backwards, claiming in a new interview that she wants to write for other artists. Real name Elly Jackson, the electro star has told the NME that groups in the industry have attracted by her writing.
“We’ve (Jackson and band partner Ben Langmaid) been asked to do some writing for other people,” said the singer.
“I’ll probably do it under another name,” she said. “If I write something that’s really good I’m just gonna do it myself. I’m not gonna give it to someone else, am I?” claimed La Roux.
With her debut album not due to be released until next month, La Roux revealed that she has already begun work on the follow up. “I’d definitely like to get some thin, phased-out guitars”.
There has been a steady rise in the number of credible artists who choose to write within the industry. Santigold wrote for a number of artists before turning solo with last year’s spectacular debut album, while songwriting team Xenomania are always in demand.
The pop supergroup worked with Pet Shop Boys on their new album, while Franz Ferdinand also attempted to work with Xenomania – who are more used to crafting chart busting hits by the likes of Girls Aloud.
La Roux is due to release her self-titled debut album on June 29th.
