East London riser kwn has shared her new single ‘wn way or another’.
Out now, the song was produced alongside UK hyphenate Tendai, and it’s a bubbling piece of future-fixated pop music that interpolates dancehall vocal effects and a cool Blondie interpolation.
Nabbing a lyric from the new wave group’s ‘One Way Or Another’, this seed then grows into something hugely distinct, a headlong rush into pop possibility.
The emphatic production is aligned to kwn’s pointed lyricism, with ‘wn way or another’ discussing the perils of feeling trapped in a toxic relationship. A song about a lack of balance, it ends with a plea for femme independence.
She comments: “Being in a toxic relationship and feeling as if I was giving 100% and they were giving 0%.”
Musically, ‘wn way or another’ taps into London club culture, and the experience of coming of age in that vortex. “That period of my life was a big learning curve, it taught me a lot about myself and i’m so glad that i’m able to write music and express my emotions through my songs because i can look back now and be like rah, i really got through that and i really persevered.”
