Seminal German electronic powerhouse Kompakt are set to celebrate a new milestone with the release of their new album ‘Kompakt 10’.
Although techno was incubated in the intense industrial atmosphere of Detroit, it has found a second home in Germany. With its pulsing 4×4 rhythms and metallic synths techno recalled early electronic greats such as Kraftwerk yet also pointed to the future.
Kompakt was founded in Cologne by Wolfgang Voigt, Michael Mayer and Jürgen Paape. Basically an extensive of their record shop, the trio set about releasing tracks they and their friends had produced.
Inadvertently starting a revolution in dance music, Kompakt specialise in micro-house and minimal techno. Extolling subtlety and feeling over bangin’ in your faces grooves, the label’s less is more policy has made them one of the most renowned electronic imprints in Europe.
The Cologne imprint are best known for their ‘Total’ compilations. Featuring Kompakt artists and affiliated talents, the compilations are remarkable primers for new electronic talent. Simply put – they don’t put any old stuff on there.
Now up to its tenth instalment, Kompakt are due to celebrate the anniversary of their flagship compilation with a very special edition. Spread over the course of 2 CD’s and 2 LP’s ‘Total 10’ includes contributions from the likes of DJ Koze, Thomas / Mayer, Wolfgang Voigt and many more.
Marking a difference from other editions is the inclusion of remixes. ‘Total 10’ will include Gui Boratto remixing Sam Taylor Wood, who was in turn produced by Pet Shop Boys. The new compilation also includes the long lost remix of Gotye’s ‘Heart’s A Mess’ by Supermayer.
One of the most unexpected releases in Kompakt’s history, the new compilation features a diverse cast and showcases the wealth of talent that the imprint can command. A decade not out, ‘Total 10’ is a stunning salute to one of Europe’s finest dance labels.
