KOKOKO! Share Rousing New Single ‘Motema Mabe’

New album 'BUTU' is out next month...

Pioneers of Kinshasa’s sonic revolution, KOKOKO! today share their new single, ‘Motema Mabe’, lifted from much-anticipated second album, ‘BUTU’, out July 5th via Transgressive Records.

An anthemic, anarchic call-to-arms, ‘Motema Mabe’, follows recent singles ‘Mokili‘, ‘Salaka Bien‘ and ‘Bazo Banga‘, and explores themes of imitation and appropriation. “‘Motema Mabe’ is about karma getting back at people who can’t be original and claim things that they haven’t created,” the duo explain.

The Congolese city’s after-dark energy was the inspiration behind ‘BUTU’, which means ‘the night’ in Lingala. The experimental record surveys the charged, celebratory chaos at the heart of the city. With vocalist Makara Bianko at the helm and production from Xavier Thomas, AKA Débruit, this follow-up to 2019’s ‘Fongola finds the duo channelling a more electronic, upbeat sound. The duo employed saturated and distorted speakers on ‘BUTU’, which captures the frisson of the Congolese after-hours experience. “Compared to ‘Fongola’, this album is intentionally way more intense, because it’s quite upbeat and quite full-on,” Thomas says.

In preparation for ‘BUTU’, KOKOKO! will takeover Rough Trade stores the week of its release, perform at Green Man festival and will headline their biggest London show at Village Underground on October 1st as part of Transgressive Records 20th birthday celebrations.
