Kim Gordon has opened up about her split from former husband Thurston Moore.
From outside, Sonic Youth looked to be a perfectly stable unit. A legendary alt rock outfit, the band have survived time and trend, navigating their way from the underground to a major label – and back again.
However the band drew to a halt in October 2011. Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore announced their split, following 27 years of a seemingly happy marriage.
Since then, neither party has commented on the breakdown of their relationship. In the new issue of Elle, however, Kim Gordon is quite candid about the split, revealing that a third party played a significant factor.
The bass player states that Thurston Moore cheated on her and – despite counselling – the relationship could not be salvaged. "We never got to the point where we could just get rid of her so I could decide what I wanted to do" she said. "Thurston was carrying on this whole double life with her. He was really like a lost soul."
Asked how she coped with the situation, Kim Gordon said: "Rap music is really good when you’re traumatised."
Agonisingly, the musician was diagnosed with a form of breast cancer named DCIS shortly after the split. "I’m fine; it’s literally the best you can have" she revealed. "I didn’t do radiation or anything, but I was like, Okay, what else is going to happen to me?"
One of the first interviews Kim Gordon undertook following the announcement of her split with Thurston Moore was with Clash Magazine. To read an extract click HERE.
