Las Vegas indie titans The Killers have revealed in a new interview that they are planning to release a covers album before the end of the year.
Formed in the shadow of casinos and neon signs, The Killers embody a slice of the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas. The band were catapulted in the big leagues last year, with the success of their album ‘Day & Age’.
Spawning the enormous hit ‘Human’ and its lovably daft chorus, the album sold by the bucketload launching The Killers into the premiere league of pop. Brandon Flowers was chosen to present his heroes Pet Shop Boys with a Brit Award, and was even allowed to sing with them at the ceremony.
However non-stop touring pushed the band to the brink. Travelling around the world, tabloid reports stated that The Killers were one another’s throats. With practising Mormon Brandon Flowers caught in the middle, some feared for the group’s future.
But a spell in the recording studio seems to be helping The Killers. In a new interview Brandon Flowers and Ronnie Vanucci reveal that the group are planning to record an album of covers.
“It’s something that we’ve always talked about doing and we’re still talking about,” Flowers told NME. “It’s difficult for each of us to pick songs that represent us as individuals. I mean, I have a lot of personalities myself! I’ve gone through everything from Neil Diamond to The Cars.”
Vanucci cited acts including “Genesis, Tom Waits, a little Cyndi Lauper, Iggy Pop” as possible acts for the album.
The Killers have recorded cover versions before. The band’s 2006 album ‘Sawdust’ contained rarities, with The Killers running through versions of songs by artists such as Dire Straights and Kenny Rogers.
In addition to this, The Killers recorded a version of the Joy Division classic ‘Shadowplay’ which was used in the Ian Curtis biopic ‘Control’.
The band are preparing to play two nights in London’s historic Royal Albert Hall. A watershed moment for The Killers, the group are planning to film the concert and release the footage as a tour DVD.
