Katy B has revealed her shock at the enormous chart success she enjoyed this summer.
Perhaps more so than any other single performer, Katy B represents the new chart-friendly wave of dubstep. Working with Benga, her bass heavy single ‘Katy On A Mission’ helped to define the summer.
First conquering the soundsystems, a spruced up version of ‘Katy On A Mission’ stormed the charts. Buoyed by radio play, the single smashed into the Top Five becoming dubstep’s biggest hit to date.
Also working with Magnetic Man, Katy B has been difficult to avoid this summer. Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, the singer has revealed her shock at the track’s sudden success.
“It’s really mad because when I recorded it I didn’t think it would even have the chance of entering the top 40,” she said. “It was just a dubstep track I was going to vocal. It’s been a bit weird.”
‘On A Mission’ began as an instrumental cut which Benga would drop into sets. In demand from fans, the London producer hooked up with the unknown singer to craft a sultry, swaggering cut.
‘Katy On A Mission’ was playlisted by Radio One, cracking the charts soon afterwards. “It’s not the typical dubstep tune – it’s got a lot of melody and structure to it,” she said.
“Lyrics wise… usually dubstep always makes me want to write about really dark things. It doesn’t make me want to write about happy, love and dancing with my girls.”
“This track didn’t have that feel so I wanted to write about how it feels when you go into a club and there’s so much energy in a room – basically putting that into words. It’s about how I feel when I go raving with my friends.”
Katy B appears on the new Magnetic Man single ‘Perfect Stranger’.
