Kanye West / Jay-Z Break iTunes Record

'Watch The Throne' sets new standard

Kanye West and Jay-Z’s new album ‘Watch The Throne’ has broken the record for the most iTunes downloads in the first week of release.

First rumoured back in 2010, it almost feels bizarre to hold a copy of ‘Watch The Throne’ in your hand. Bringing together two of hip hop’s most iconic talents, Jay-Z and Kanye West are on blistering form throughout.

Smashing into the charts, ‘Watch The Throne’ has immediately broken a few records. The album was released last week, and managed to sell over 290,000 copies through iTunes alone.

The total surpasses the record set by Coldplay, whose previous album ‘Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends’ sold 282,000 copies. With Chris Martin & Co. set to release a new LP later this year, Kanye West and Jay-Z could have a fight on their hands…

In total, ‘Watch The Throne’ is expected to sell over 500,000 copies in its first week when sales figures are announced.

Despite the enormous sales, ‘Watch The Throne’ could not claim number one on the UK album charts. ‘Back To Black’ by the late Amy Winehouse remains in pole position, with Adele’s ’21’ continuing its chart dominance in second place.

‘Watch The Throne’ instead made do with third place. Meanwhile, on the Stateside charts the album has claimed pole position with Kanye West and Jay-Z out-selling all of their nearest rivals.

Kanye West has continually been in the press of late. During a festival show in Scandinavia the rapper joined several people in a stage invasion during a set by legendary purple clad icon Prince.

Later, the rapper made a surprise appearance at Big Sean’s London club debut. Leaping onstage at Cargo, Kanye West praised the emerging hip hop star before disappearing into the crowd.

‘Watch The Throne’ is out now.
