Kaiser Chiefs have revealed that their upcoming single is partially inspired by Twitter.
The internet has connected people in staggering new ways, allowing for the free-flow of information. Conversely, though, the web has also enshrined opinion as fact – and there are plenty of opinions out there…
Kaiser Chiefs know this more than most. Always a divisive group, the Leeds band were recently inspired to write a track tackling the less positive aspects of the information age.
‘On The Run’ was written during sessions for their new album, but was eventually left off ‘The Future Is Medieval’. Given a standalone release, ‘On The Run’ was sparked by a debate within the band about the internet.
Kaiser Chiefs drummer Nick Hodgson told the Daily Star that the track is a “rant against modern society”. Recorded in just four days, the drummer explained: “I’m on the run from the world really. There are too many opinions out there, like on Twitter. It’s full of rude, cruel people.”
‘The Future Is Medieval’ was released earlier this year, and stretched the definition of an ‘album’ until it broke. Fans were able to choose from 25 tracks, assembling their preferred material into a ten song LP.
Speaking about the writing process, Nick Hodgson explained that the continual recording sessions took their toll. “I was constantly writing for a year, every day as soon as I got up,” he said. “Even going to the bathroom, I was thinking of words, forcing them to come, until my mind was: ‘Aargh’.”
Looking ahead, Kaiser Chiefs are set to play a one off London show before the end of the year. Part of the XFM Winter Wonderland series, the band will play the O2 Academy Brixton on December 14th.
Part of a multi-band line up, Kaiser Chiefs will be joined by Tribes and Scouse songbird Miles Kane.
