Kaiser Chiefs have spoken about their recent return with ‘The Future Is Medieval’.
Kaiser Chiefs aren’t exactly known for their groundbreaking approach to music. Yet the knockabout indie outfit are responsible for one of this year’s most surprising comebacks in the form of ‘The Future Is Medieval’.
Released through their website, Kaiser Chiefs allowed fans to choose from 20 available tracks. An extremely unusual method – especially for such a high profile act – the album contains some of their most thoughtful, downbeat material yet.
Set to be given a physical release this summer, Kaiser Chiefs have spoken about their decision to return with such a glut of new material.
“We recorded 20 songs” Ricky Wilson told Absolute Radio. “What we wanted to do was sort of… because we’d been away for quite a while, one of the things we wanted to do was not just come back with 10 songs, you know, because we wanted to flex our muscles a little bit and say, you know, ‘We can do 20, we can do double that, we’ll double you’.”
Speaking to the station’s Ben Jones backstage at Hard Rock Calling, the band were able to air their new material for the first time. ‘The Future Is Medieval’ has been given its live debut, with some of the group’s more devoted fan-base immediately taking to the album.
“Okay, I like seeing a little bit of a pocket, a small amount of people, because the way we’ve released it is weird, and there’s a small pocket of people that love a particular song” explained Ricky Wilson. “It’s happened today with ‘Long Way From Celebrating’, and I saw this guy, I saw the look on his face, and he went like this, ‘Yes!’, and then he was determined to have a good time with that, and even though all around him they were going ‘We’ve never heard this before’, he was there and he was shaking people going ‘Dance!’”
Finishing, the frontman praised the new Kaiser Chiefs website. “It may not be the best website in the world, but it’s definitely the best band website ever made” he joked.
