Juni Habel has shared her new song ‘Chicory’.
The songwriter resides in an old converted school house alongside her grandmother, a building situated in the wilds of Southern Norway. A idyllic hinterland, she writes and records on her own terms, with new album ‘Carvings’ bringing her alt-folk meditations into one place.
Out on January 13th, the stark, mediative songwriting recalls the acoustic cycles of Nick Drake, while also hinting at the work of Karen Dalton, say, or contemporaries such as Aoife Nessa Frances or Julie Byrne.
“I knew I wanted to write from a larger perspective. I wanted to write about the course of nature, and the people in it – life and death, beauty and tragedy.” Juni says, “loss – the search for the dead – grasping to find the words, and liberation of giving that up. I also wanted to explore my own kinship with nature – a sense of belonging, and notice what is around with gratitude and zest for life.”
New song ‘Chicory’ taps into these themes, its gentle rise and fall embodying the natural currents that linger all around us.
