Julian Casablancas Solo Return

Star hints at second album

Strokes singer turned solo star Julian Casablancas has hinted to ClashMusic that he could record more material under his own name.

As lead singer of The Strokes, Julian Casablancas became the pin up for a generation. The epitome of rock ‘n’ roll cool, his New York drawl was imitated across the world.

Stepping outside the confines of the group for his new album ‘Phrazes For The Young’ the singer gathered around him some like minded musicians. The result is an acclaimed release, with Julian Casablancas allowing his songwriting skills to develop in unexpected directions.

With fans clamouring for a new album by The Strokes, the singer recently told ClashMusic that he could return to his solo career.

Asked if he has been writing material beyond the album sessions, Julian Casablancas refused to rule out a second release. “I don’t really write on the road, but before that I’ve got a bunch of stuff for I don’t know what. But I’m always busy – I just need the time to figure out what to do with them.”

Continuing, Julian Casablancas paid tribute to the musicians who assisted on the album. “I kinda like to keep it consistent, so the trick was really to make the band work the way the record works, which was a little complicated because the whole record was not a live band – it was a bunch of different stuff put together carefully.”

“Sometimes in the verse there would be three instruments and then in the chorus there’s five, or vice versa, you know what I mean? So there’s people playing keyboards and then they switch to a ride cymbal or bass – it’s so crazy.”

The singer also spoke about moving between the group / solo dynamic with The Strokes. “Is it difficult to switch between your musical responsibilities?” he pondered. “Your mindset is all about the solo tour but then you’ll have to get into the Strokes world next month… I don’t think it will be that tricky. I’ve got like a month between the two.”
