Jorja Smith has shared her cover of East 17’s ‘Stay Another Day’.
The song was released back in 1994, and has become an evergreen festive staple – despite lyrically having nothing to do with Christmas. Maybe it’s the fake snow and fur jackets in the original video from the Walthamstow outfit…
No one can truly top the East 17 original, but Jorja Smith gives it a good go on this new cover. Slowing the tempo, her jazz-leaning vocal looks to the pathos of the original, while adding something soulful and fresh in the process.
Out now, she comments:
“I had a lot of fun putting my own unique spin on this timeless Christmas classic… Hope you all enjoy it!”
The video was sculpted by London based production company BlinkInk, known for their work on the famed John Lewis advert series. Jack Brown steps in to work on animation and design, and it looks to another side of city life, replete with wild animals, decorations, and snow.
Jack Brown, director of BlinkInk adds…
“‘Stay Another Day’ has been totally transformed by Jorja’s take and I think the lyrics have a whole new sense of meaning. For the music video I wanted it to have a lovely handmade, classical look, while also being unexpected and giving the viewer the feeling of being a ghost of the Christmas past, floating through the video.”
An Amazon Music Original, you can tune in now.
