Reverend And The Makers singer Jon McClure has blasted the BNP in a new track fans can download for free.
A cult figure in Sheffield, Jon McClure acted as a mentor to the young Alex Turner with his quasi-mystic spoken word performances being a staple of the city’s live scene. Forming Reverend & The Makers, the singer quickly gained national attention due his outspoken nature and stockpile of indie anthems.
Striking it big with Top Ten debut album ‘The State Of Things’ Reverend & The Makers seemed to be on top of the world. However McClure’s mouth got the better of him and in an interview he let slip that he was splitting the group and abandoning music.
Later backtracking, the singer formed the group Mongrel who released their debut album earlier this year. Now returning to the group who made his name, Reverend & The Makers are set to release their second album ‘French Kiss In The Chaos’ later this year.
The singer has always been politically active, playing numerous shows to benefit the organisation Love Music Hate Racism. With the European elections taking place at the end of last week, Jon McClure was shocked to witness the British National Party score a record share of the vote.
With their far right policies and anti-immigration stance, the BNP have come in for fierce criticism. When leader Nick Griffin arrived at a polling station in Manchester he was met with resistance, as groups of protesters barred his way.
Jon McClure is no fan of the party or their politics. The singer has recorded a new song which blasts the party and those who voted for them. Titled ‘Manifesto / People Shapers’ the track is a searing condemnation of the BNP.
With Reverend & The Makers set to release their new album soon, and had no plans to record any new material. However with the BNP on the rise Jon McClure has broken with the band’s schedule to do his bit to fight against the rising of the far right in Britain.
