A bizarre new video has emerged online of Johnny Marr piercing the ear of his bandmate in The Cribs Ryan Jarman.
Johnny Marr is a genuine guitar legend. Joining The Smiths at the age of just 17 his strumming adorns their finest records, adding a musical backbone to Morrissey’s famed lyrics. Moving from punk to bubblegum pop in the blink of an eye, Marr’s guitar work influenced a generation of musicians.
After The Smiths imploded in 1987 Marr formed Electronic with Bernard Sumner, before going on to work as a guitar slinger for hire. It seems that the Manchester musician now wants to work in a group environment again, and has joined Wakefield’s celebrated indie troupe The Cribs.
The band have just completed a new UK tour, which saw them play a host of new songs as well as the odd Smiths classic or two. Currently recording their fourth album with Nick Launay, The Cribs seem to be in the mood for some initiation ceremonies.
The new video shows Johnny Marr piercing his band mates ear, and features some new material in the background. “We should bring the ear piercing back in vogue – because we are a hipster band,” Jarman declares in the video.
The Cribs are famously anti-hipster, releasing the single ‘Hey Scenesters’ to mock fashionista trends.
