Indie icon Ian Brown has shocked fans by revealing that John Squire sent him a song for his new album ‘My Way’.
Ian Brown and John Squire have not spoken since the guitarist left The Stone Roses. After lurching on with a replacement, the group played a disastrous slot at Reading festival in 1996 before splitting for good.
Since then, the two have barely exchanged any words. When Ian Brown was sent to jail Squire sent him a postcard claiming he was thinking of him, urging the singer to keep his spirits up.
Earlier this year Stone Roses re-union rumours were met with fury by John Squire, who constructed an elaborate art work to display his fury. Later auctioned for charity, the guitarist claimed to have given up music for good.
However in a bizarre new twist Ian Brown has revealed that John Squire sent him a song for potential inclusion in his new album ‘My Way’.
Speaking to BBC 6Music the singer claimed the track was “pretty good” but his son convinced him to drop it from the album.
“Kid said, ‘Look dad, was he looking out for you back then (during the split)? Are you sure you wanna do that?’” said Ian Brown.
“I could have fitted on the first three minutes of the tune, it was pretty good. He definitely did it with me in mind because it had electronic, hip-hop drums on it and I thought, ‘Whoever’s done that must have heard me solo stuff’. He’s still got it, it’s good.”
Ian Brown’s new album ‘My Way’ is out now.
