John Peel’s Son For 6Music

Tom Ravenscroft to get new show

Tom Ravenscroft, the son of legendary broadcaster John Peel, has been given a show on under threat station 6Music.

To many fans, 6Music has come to assume the mantle of John Peel. The legendary broadcaster joined Radio One in 1967, and stuck to his guns for over forty years in an attempt to shed light on new talent.

Pushing back the boundaries, Peel helped bring the British listeners dub, punk, hip hop and more. Forever associated with indie music, the broadcaster played a diverse cross section of world music which could move from Africa to death metal in the space of seconds.

Sadly dying in 2004, many fans see 6Music as continuing the work of John Peel in presenting new talent. Fostering the careers of countless new groups, the station is currently under threat by a cash strapped BBC.

However a new appointment brings the story full circle. John Peel’s son Tom Ravenscroft has been given a slot at 6Music, reports The Times, following in his father’s footsteps.

Ravenscroft – who uses his father’s real surname – began his radio career when John Peel was still alive. Throwing himself into the role, he has a similar ethos with the presenter eager to find new talent.

With a typically self-deprecating sense of humour Tom Ravenscroft will join a roster of DJs who include some of Britain’s most respected musicians and journalists. With the likes of Lauren Laverne and Jarvis Cocker presenting shows, you know that you will be in good hands.

Beginning on June 4th, Tom Ravenscroft will replace Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson who has been with 6Music since its inception eight years ago.
