John Lydon Bemoans Oasis Split

But Liam Gallagher is "second-rate"

Punk icon John Lydon has given his thoughts on the recent Oasis split, saying he was “sad” to hear of their dilemma.

John Lydon might be better known for flogging butter and appearing on survival shows these days, but as the lead singer with Sex Pistols he was responsible for changing the shape of rock ‘n’ roll.

Sure, punk had existed before then but once the Sex Pistols came onto the scene a generation of young people suddenly knew what they wanted to do with their lives. Releasing one seismic album, the Sex Pistols then imploded under their own weight.

After this John Lydon pulled himself from the wreckage and formed the controversial Public Image Limited. With their avant garde approach to rock music the band shocked and alienated many punk fans, but remain a vastly influential group.

Lydon recently took PiL out of hiatus in order to tour their classic album ‘Metal Box’ in time for its 30th anniversary. However the singer also took time out recently to talk about the Oasis split, with Noel Gallagher walking out of the band.

In an interview with Female First the frontman claims “it is sad”.

“They’re a nice backdrop on a dull day. There’s no content or depth to Oasis but it’s still poignant.”

Oasis are noted fans of the Sex Pistols. Noel Gallagher cited them as an inspiration, with one time label boss Alan McGee once publishing a full page review of a re-union concert in the NME.

John Lydon showed his appreciation of the group by claiming that “Noel is fantastic, one of Britain’s finest”. However brother Liam came in for some stick, with Lydon saying “Liam’s alright if you want a second-rate Rotten.”

“I remember hearing ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’ for the first time and it sounded like John Lennon and John Lydon mixed together.”
