John Lennon Lyrics Mystery

Newly found item goes on display

A set of lyrics written by former Beatles singer John Lennon have gone on display in Liverpool.

Despite being one of the most iconic acts in the history of rock music, The Beatles retain a small degree of mystery. Sure, their back catalogue is easily available and due to their economy of songwriting out-takes are thin on the ground.

Yet somehow tantalising new items continually emerge. Earlier this year the full tapes to the sessions that produced ‘Revolution’ emerged online, giving a fascinating insight into the band’s work process.

Furthermore, the new ‘Rock Band – The Beatles’ game is set to contain never before heard studio chatter between the Fab Four. With the band’s studio albums set to be re-released later this year, a new generation could be set to fall in love with the Scouse mop tops.

A new show on the life of John Lennon contains a curious artefact. ‘White Feather: The Spirit Of Lennon’ has been curated by his first wife Cynthia and his son Julian. The pair have donated a number of rare items to the show, including a mysterious set of lyrics.

The sheet has caused fans to scratch their heads, with Beatles Story curator Ann Darby claiming that she believes that originate from around 1966. “When the lyrics came up for auction over ten years ago, the auctioneers Sotheby’s estimated they were written in 1966,” he said.

“This seems to be based on the fact that some of the lyrics are written on a note sent to George Harrison by some Japanese fans. The Beatles played in Japan that year, but this could of course be a coincidence.”

Julian Lennon added that he may use the lyrics at one point in the future. “I don’t believe the lyrics have been used anywhere,” he explained.

“If the time was right, if it felt right, then I would consider looking at the lyrics and maybe trying to work with them and write something. But obviously only in honour of Dad. I guess in some respect it would be like coming home.”

‘White Feather: The Spirit Of Lennon’ runs until December 31st. Read the lyrics below:

Little girl I’ve come to stay
And this time I just have to say
I love you
If she turns you down and you’re rejected
Try again the best you can
Call to see her when you’re least expected
Tell her now she’ll understand
