A lyric sheet handwritten by John Lennon is to be sold at auction later this summer.
By 1967, The Beatles were much more than a pop band. Leaving behind their days as a teen-scream institution, the band retired from touring to focus their energies on experimenting in the studio.
Holing themselves up in Abbey Road, The Beatles crafted their 1967 album ‘Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band’. Amongst their most commercially and artistically successful offerings, the album finishes with the epic track ‘A Day In The Life’.
A stunning example of the Lennon & McCartney partnership, the handwritten lyric sheet for the track is now set to be sold at auction.
Written by John Lennon, the lyrics feature felt pen and blue ink. Correcting the words as the track progressed, a number of edits are made in red ink.
Kept in a private collection for more than 40 years, the lyric sheet is now due to be sold at auction this summer.
BBC News reports that John Lennon’s lyric sheet will be auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York on June 18th. Bidding is expected to be ferocious for the lyric sheet, with fans already speculating on its worth.
Sources from Sotheby’s have claimed that the hand written sheet could fetch anything up to $700,000.
Meanwhile, Lennon’s home city of Liverpool is set to host a two month celebration of his life and legacy later this year. Featuring exhibitions, live music and more the event comes as the 30th anniversary of the singer’s death approaches.
