Former Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Surrey, it has been announced.
The former devotee of black magic was made a Doctor of the University as a reward for years of service to the music industry. Page began a session musician, appearing on some of the top hits of the day including “Baby Please Don’t Go” by Them. After a stint in seminal UK group The Yardbirds, Page then formed Led Zeppelin and went on to stride the planet with his twin-necked guitar and flowing locks.
The award ceremony took place at Guildford Cathedral on June 20th. Jimmy Page has previously received an OBE in 2005 for his work with Brazilian street children – work for which he was also made an honorary citizen of Rio De Janeiro.
