Rap icon Jay-Z has cleared up his football allegiances, admitting that he supports Arsenal.
Jay-Z has finally cracked Britain. An almost unrivalled star in his native United States, the rapper has long struggled with our more temperate climes.
Last year’s album ‘The Blueprint 3’ however, changed all that. With singles such as ‘Empire State Of Mind’ the hip hop icon cracked the charts wide open, becoming an icon all over again.
Playing a series of huge arena shows, Jay-Z was snapped at a few football grounds cementing his relationship with Britain. Previously thought to be an Arsenal supporter, he caused consternation last year after attending a game by Manchester City.
The Light Blues trounced Arsenal 4-2 that day, sparking fears amongst the London team’s supporters. In a new interview with Arsenal Magazine, however, Jay-Z confirms his allegiance to the Gunners.
“After that game the press started reporting that I was a Manchester City fan, I am really glad all that has been cleared up and that everybody in the UK knows that I am an Arsenal fan,” he explained.
Jay-Z was apparently attracted to Arsenal by the performances of French striker Thierry Henry. “It was about five years ago now,” he said. “When Thierry Henry was at the club I saw him play and I just thought he was an amazing player. Ever since then I have been a big fan of the club, following you guys, and still today you play the beautiful football that Thierry did. I think he had a real long term-effect on the team.”
The rapper finished by claiming that he may consider investing in the club. “I am a businessman, and I will always look at an opportunity, and if it feels right great,” he said.
“I don’t know a lot about the business of soccer, but in the future if the right opportunity presented itself, then who knows?”
