Hip hop goliath Jay-Z has claimed that his row with fellow rapper Nas meant more to him than the much publicised spat with Noel Gallagher.
Jay-Z may be one of the most instantly recognisable musical talents on the planet, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his enemies. The rapper has attracted some unwanted attention from some unlikely enemies.
When the rapper was booked to headline Glastonbury in 2008 many were shocked, with the hippy event better known for hosting guitar acts. Noel Gallagher voiced the concerns of many by saying that Jay-Z was the “wrong” booking for the festival to make.
However these comments enraged some commentators, who felt that the Oasis star was dissing hip hop. Jay-Z did his part in making Gallagher look foolish by playing a storming set, opening with a special mash up including sections of ‘Wonderwall’.
Since then, Jay-Z has settled his ongoing beef with fellow rapper Nas. The pair had fallen out over samples and guest spot disputes.
Speaking to Shortlist magazine Jay-Z was asked which argument “meant more” to him. Jay-Z insisted that the beef with Nas meant more, as it came “from hip-hop. It was a great time in hip-hop, a great battle.”
“Noel, that was pretty cool too. That felt more like me progressing and knocking down a different barrier more than a thing with me and Noel. I think it was more about (Glastonbury_, we were arguing about that, not arguing with each other. He was, ‘I wanted it to be like I always saw it!’. I was like, ‘No, the world’s changing’.”
However Jay-Z did suggest that a return to Glastonbury could one day be on the cards. “I rank it as one of those moments when I first got a Grammy. The people wanted it, the people were like, ‘No, we like Jay-Z and we like Noel, we like both of you guys.”
Jay-Z’s new album ‘The Blueprint 3’ was released this week.
