Rapper claims Jackson was a "genius"

American hip hop star Jay-Z has praised Michael Jackson, labelling the singer a "genius".

Jay-Z is now one of biggest entertainers on the planet. The rapper's deal with Live Nation made him one of the richest men in hip hop, releasing his new album 'The Blueprint 3' to widespread acclaim.

Becoming a global hit Jay-Z currently has two songs in the UK Top Ten singles chart. By now a bona fide megastar, the rapper recently paid tribute to trailblazing black American icon Michael Jackson.

"I try to look for the meaning in things that happen, and it was a tragedy that Michael Jackson passed away, especially for his kids he told the NME.

"But on the other side, I think it gave Michael a chance to be celebrated for the genius he was without all the other stuff in the way, and I don’t know if that would ever have happened had he been alive."

The pair actually worked together before Jackson's death. Jay-Z remixed the singer's 'You Rock My World' before Michael Jackson appeared on the rapper's single 'Girls Girls Girls' - without being credited.

"He played a concert with me in New York, which was great. He got up and he walked out and the place went mental, guys were just grabbing their hats and throwing them like,

"I remember him calling me and him just talking about, you know, ‘syncopation’ and musician stuff like that" Jay-Z explained. "The Michael Jackson I knew was just a musician who loved music."
