An interview Jarvis Cocker gave to GQ Magazine recently has resulted in the singer attempting to clarify his political position.
After the disintegration of Pulp following ‘We Love Life’ Jarvis Cocker’s solo career has run a strange and winding course. After work with the Relaxed Muscle project Cocker then began write material for his debut solo album ‘Jarvis’.
Politically outspoken, Jarvis Cocker refused to take part in the Cool Britannia love in, preferring instead to harangue all parties involved from the sidelines. Launching his solo career at the Reading festival in 2006, Cocker played a charming little ditty named ‘Running The World’ in which he called the leaders of the Western world something very naughty indeed.
However a recent interview with GQ saw the singer appear to endorse the Conservative party. Jarvis Cocker criticised Prime Minister Gordon Brown by saying “I can’t get my head around the fact he’s trying to bail out a banking system that obviously doesn’t work. Why don’t they say, ‘Well, sod that, let’s do something else?'”.
Cocker then goes on to describe the Conservatives taking power as being “necessary” for Britain. “Labour has been in power for a certain amount of time and (apart from the Conservatives) there is no credible alternative, so if you’re not going to have Labour you’re going to have the Conservatives. You can sense an era passing.”
However the singer has acted quick to rule out any possible hint of Conservative party support. “In no way am I supporting or suggesting that a Conservative government is a good thing, far from it,” said the former Pulp singer in a statement released today.
“Rather, what I intended to get across was that, in the absence of any real alternative, a Conservative government at this point unfortunately seems inevitable.”
Jarvis Cocker has been working on his second solo album ‘Further Complications’. The singer debuted much of the material on a Rough Trade anniversary tour last year, and is set to headline the Green Man event this summer.
Jarvis Cocker is set to release ‘Further Complications’ on May 18th.
