With his recent single ‘Sticks N Stones’ riding high in the charts, ClashMusic have caught up with Jamie T to see what makes the songwriter tick.
Emerging from Wimbledon with tales of council estate life, Jamie T’s startling debut album ‘Panic Prevention’ more than lived up to the early hype. Sure, it might nod to The Clash and Billy Bragg but there was nothing retro about it – the album could only have been a product of London at that time.
Yet while Jamie T’s music might be definable in terms of time and place, he remains capable of transmitting something universal. New single ‘Sticks N Stones’ (REVIEW) does just that, transcending time and place to become a bona fide anthem.
ClashMusic recently caught up with the singer after a triumphant appearance at T In The Park, and found him on provocative form. Asked about his own artistic independence, Jamie T was unequivocal.
“You’ve got to do things on your own fucking terms otherwise you’re fucked. It’s not your stuff. The thing to remember is that an artist is more than just an artist, there are the people who work behind him.”
“People like to trust artists, they like to support them. If you fuck with shit it’s obviously not going to work, and everyone I work with is professional enough to know that. They leave me to do what I want.”
With his new album due for release at the tail end of the summer, hopes are high that Jamie T can repeat the success of his debut album. Titled ‘Kings And Queens’ the new album retains the brutal honesty of Jamie T’s debut, but adds new elements to his music. For more details on the new album click HERE!
Yet for the singer all that seems to matter is that he enjoys making his music.
“I don’t feel pressure because someone’s given me an accolade. You feel pressure because you want to make something good, you feel pressure from yourself. But at the same time you’ve got to drop all that along the way, make yourself happy.”
