Artist, poet and DJ James Massiah has today shared new single, ‘Charlie’, lifted from his forthcoming EP, ‘True Romance’, out via Jon Rust’s label LEVELS.
In keeping with the after-hours spirit of last month’s release ‘Soon Touch’, follow-up ‘Charlie’ is a nocturnal odyssey, with spectral synth work chiming over a grimy, metronome-like beat, as Massiah details a murky story between unbridled passion and destructive fixation.
The upcoming ‘True Romance’ EP melds together Massiah’s love for songwriting, rap, dancehall, grime, acid, dub and of poetry, with six tracks that encapsulate “the dark yet electrifying energy of London’s nightlife whilst documenting the highs and lows of his love story”.
The accompanying video from director duo Ethan & Tom (Jeshi, Louis Culture) nods at “the culture defining Channel U and early grime raves, closing in on James as he MC’s in a dark and crowded underground club”.
