Gently aging Britpop survivors James have attacked Prime Minister Gordon Brown for using the band’s classic anthem ‘Sit Down’ as his introduction song at the Labour Party Conference.
This year’s Labour Party Conference is taking place in the band’s home city of Manchester, and someone in the Brown camp obviously thought it was a nifty idea to play the classic James anthem ‘Sit Down’ when the Prime Minister took to the podium.
However, this idea has earned the wrath of James’ singer Tim Booth who has hit out at Brown in The Independent, saying “we have always been supportive of the Labour Party, as well as Greenpeace, Amnesty and CND, but obviously the machinations of a desperate politician trying to restore unity by using our song is not something we are totally behind.”
Booth went on to say that using ‘Sit Down’ in this way completely misses the point of the song. “The song is about unity and that’s obviously how Brown is trying to use it. But it’s about unity of people and spirit rather than healing the divisions of political parties.”
Gordon Brown – he just can’t catch a break.
