Vinyl sales in the UK have reached yet more record-breaking levels, a new report confirms.
The Official Chart Company have released their year-end breakdown for 2022, a tumultuous year in British life. As previously reported, Harry Styles claimed 2022’s best-selling single and album, a double feat from the unstoppable pop icon.
Over on the vinyl charts, it seems that music fans have sent the format spiralling to dizzying heights. More than 5.5 million units were shifted in 2022 alone, a record not seen since 1990 – when Phil Collins’ ‘…But Seriously’ topped the charts, flares came back in, and Manchester reigned supreme.
2022 saw Taylor Swift dominate the vinyl charts, with ‘Midnights’ – and its myriad of different pressings – topping the final Top 10 countdown. In all, it shifted in excess of 80,000 units – an impressive feat from Tay Tay.
Harry Styles is in second place, with Arctic Monkeys’ easy-listening opus ‘The Car’ sitting third.
Liam Gallagher is fourth with his solo record ‘C’mon You Know’ with Wet Leg’s eponymous debut album sitting in sixth place. Muse round out the Top 10, hitting tenth spot with ‘Will Of The People’.
Curiously, the best-selling vinyl single was an oldie – ‘God Save The Queen’ by the Sex Pistols, with a Jubilee-inspired re-issue topping the chart.
Here’s the album countdown:
Taylor Swift – Midnights
Harry Styles – Harry’s House
Arctic Monkeys – The Car
Liam Gallagher – C’mon You Know
Fleetwood Mac – Rumours
Wet Leg – Wet Leg
The 1975 – Being Funny In A Foreign Language
Fontaines D.C. – Skinty Fia
Muse – Will Of The People
