Cork indie force Cliffords have shared new single ‘Bittersweet’.
The band’s self-financed and self-produced debut EP emerged last year, displaying their precocious energy and undoubted promise. Merging indie aspects with a tinge of 90s influence in the production, references range from Wolf Alice to the Cranberries.
Moving forwards with alacrity, Cliffords have shared a new single, the first time they’ve worked with an outside producer.
Linking up with Richie Kennedy at Battery Studios in London, ‘Bittersweet’ seems to extend their ambitions outwards. Forceful and punchy, the songwriting carries renewed heft, its defiant tale mirroring the band’s own.
Vocalist Iona Lynch comments…
‘Bittersweet’ is a more abstract look at nostalgia and our last few years of living in Cork. The first few lines of the song “the city begged look up” comes from something my grandad always said to me, “look up or you’ll miss half the beauty of the city.
‘Bittersweet’ reflects the mixed emotions of us as a band finding our way in music and in ourselves as young adults. The lyrics poke fun at heartbreaks and how dramatic and potent those feelings felt at the time.
Catch Cliffords on tour this Spring, including London’s legendary Dublin Castle venue on April 15th; the band play The Great Escape in Brighton this May.
Tune in now.
