Interpol singer Paul Banks is set to release a new solo album under the guise of ‘Julian Plenti’.
Interpol burst out of New York alongside acts such as The Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but boasted a much more obvious dark side. The group formed in college, with singer Paul Banks famously bonding with bassist Carlos D after spotting his pair of vintage Doc Martins.
The band have grown to become one of the most respected American groups of their generation. Interpol’s mix of goth styles with vast, stadiums filling sounds have pushed them to the forefront of the music scene performing a headline show at Scotland’s T In The Park last year.
However the group haven’t released an album since 2007’s ‘Our Love To Admire’. Since then, bassist Carlos D has gone solo preparing a new short film which deals with the pressures of fame. Now it seems that Paul Banks is set to join the exodus from Interpol with his new solo album.
According to a report in US magazine Billboard Banks has used the name Julian Plenti for years, but is only collecting the songs together now. Plenti’s debut album will be titled ‘Skyscraper’ and is due out towards the end of the summer in the United States.
Some of the songs on the album are reportedly brand new, however some were apparently written more than a decade ago.
As yet, not much has been heard from the album. A ‘Julian Plenti’ site has been launched HERE but there’s not much to see. There is however a snippet of a song which suggests that Banks’ new direction is synth heavy and deeply influenced by Bowie. Nice!
Fans missing Interpol need not fear – apparently the band have been busy rehearsing new material in preparation for their first album in over two years.
Julian Plenti is set to release his debut album ‘Skyscraper’ on August 4th.
