An unissued Alice Coltrane live concert will be released later this year.
The composer ascended in 2007, but her work has been unearthed by new generations of musicians. Indeed, Alice Coltrane’s influence are arguably more prominent than ever, with the spiritual nature of her improvisatory recordings proving to have enduring resonance.
Impulse! have been working with old tapes, sifting through recordings of a fabled 1971 performance. Alice Coltrane – together with an all-star ensemble – took to the stage at New York’s Carnegie Hall, playing some of her finest compositions.
Set to gain an official release this year, ‘Alice Coltrane – The Carnegie Hall Concert’ will land on March 22nd.
It looks incredible: four tracks, and musicianship from Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Jimmy Garrison, Cecil McBee, Kumar Kramer, Tulsi Reynolds, Ed Blackwell and Clifford Jarvis.
A performance of ‘Shiva-Loka’ is online now – spacious and probing, it’s held together by an almost perceptible longing for the infinite, and the exquisite technical skills of the luminaries involved.
The new release kicks off Impulse! and Verve Label Group’s Year Of Alice celebration in partnership with The John & Alice Coltrane Home.
