Iggy Pop Slams Modern Rock

Punk icon slates Limp Bizkit

Punk icon Iggy Pop has revealed that he is as dissatisfied with the state of rock as ever, with the singer lashing out at groups such as Smashing Pumpkins and Limp Bizkit.

Iggy Pop crafted the template for punk rock years before the release of ‘Anarchy In The UK’. The singer fronted The Stooges, a Detroit group whose sound and attitude would resonate through the punk explosion.

After two albums the band began to disintegrate, with Iggy Pop forming Iggy And The Stooges in order to record their final album ‘Raw Power’. An astonishingly brutal slice of rock, the album would become a touchstone for acts from the Sex Pistols to The White Stripes.

Iggy Pop’s solo career includes the celebrated albums ‘Lust For Life’ and ‘The Idiot’ but recently the singer has stunned fans with a new direction. Claiming to be bored of rock music, the punk icon has instead found inspiration in French literature and New Orleans jazz.

One of the most unusual releases of the year, ‘Preliminaries’ has gained some mixed reviews from those lucky enough to have heard it.

In a new video the punk icon has revealed his contempt at modern rock music, criticising “crappy music” by “idiot thugs with guitars”. In a new interview Iggy Pop has expanded on this, naming a number of groups as being responsible for “crappy music”.

“Anyone from Smashing Pumpkins to – what’s the one with Fred Durst?” he said in an interview with The Sun’s Something For The Weekend section, referring to Limp Bizkit.

“There are a million billion of them,” he added, “and people think they’re gods, man.”

Asked about his recent video message, Iggy Pop stated that nothing in the rant was scripted. “I took great pains not to think first,” he said, “because the thing I can’t stand is a rock star who thinks he’s got brains. They’re always so damned dull!”

It’s bad news for Iggy Pop. Limp Bizkit recently played their first show together in some time, storming the stage in Latvia with a greatest hits set. The band are planning to record new material together soon, with a new album scheduled for next year.
