A white Australian rapper, the sheer scale of Iggy Azalea’s success has won the artist more than her fair share of detractors.
Gaining criticism for her alleged appropriation of black American culture, the rapper was recently criticised by Azealia Banks and Q-Tip, while internet group Anonymous threatened to release a sex tape purportedly featuring Azalea in response to the artist "misappropriating black culture, insulting peaceful protesters, and making light of Eric Garner's death".
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Iggy Azalea was asked about her background. "Well, I never thought it was strange. If you go back to The Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley and Eminem – they've all basically done black music. I felt this wasn't that far from what we've seen in music history over and over again."
Continuing, the rapper reflected on the often ferocious criticism which has come her way. "Well, they don't say that stuff about Macklemore. So, yes, I think it has 100,000 percent to do with the fact that I have a vagina."
Clash should point out that Macklemore received ferocious criticism from the hip hop community following a mis-guided decision to apologise to Kendrick Lamar to beating the rapper at last year’s Grammy awards. Posting a screenshot of the text to Instagram, the decision brought about an enormous array of insults aimed at his music.
