How Much Did Kate Bush Earn From Stranger Things…?

A key sync sent 'Running Up That Hill' racing up the charts...

Kate Bush took home a multi-million sum following her high-profile Stranger Things sync.

Season Four of the teen horror anthology series is now online, split into two parts – the second half of the season arrived on streaming platform Netflix over the weekend.

A key scene in the first half of the season witnessed the use of ‘Running Up That Hill’, a 1985 single from Kate Bush. The song initially appeared on her album ‘Hounds Of Love’, and reached No. 3 on the UK charts – it also became a low-key Stateside smash, too.

The use of ‘Running Up That Hill’ in Stranger Things re-ignited interest in the song, and it quickly started trending on Spotify, with streaming services giving the 1985 song another push.

Remarkably, it soared to No. 1 in the UK, a higher position that it enjoyed on its initial release. A global hit, it also went to No. 1 in Australia, and topped the Billboard Hot Rock & Alternative chart.

Now Luminate have revealed that Kate Bush has amassed more than $2.3 million – and in true testimony to her independence, the English star gets to keep the vast bulk of that money, as she owns the copyright to her songs.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour about the resurgence, she said: “It’s just extraordinary. It’s such a great series, so I thought that the track would get some attention. But I just never imagined that it would be anything like this. It’s so exciting but it’s quite shocking really — the whole world’s gone mad.”
