HighSchool Return With Choppy New Single ‘Only A Dream’

Produced by Dan Carey, no less...

Melbourne trio HighSchool return with new single ‘Only A Dream’.

The Australian trio relocated to London earlier this year, throwing themselves into the festival season. Clash caught them in a sweaty Brighton basement at the Great Escape, with the trio airing new material for the first time.

Since then, they caught the eyes – and ears – of key independent label Speedy Wunderground, with co-founder Dan Carey accompanying High School to a Sicilian recording studio.

Producing a slew of new music, the first fruits of their conjoined labours are now online. ‘Only A Dream’ is rooted in that clipped guitar line, the songwriting veering from early New Order to the Go-Betweens, while pursing a path of its own.

Working with alacrity clearly suits the band, and there’s a palpable immediacy to ‘Only A Dream’ that comes direct from that sweaty Sicilian recording hub. Say the band…

“The process of making a song – from composing to recording to releasing – usually takes us ages. We labour every detail and do like 30 mixes before we’re happy. In this sense, working with Speedy has been a revelation. Completing the recording of an entire song in one day and completing the mix the next day was liberating. It taught us to be economical and concise, and not to sweat the small stuff. Dan is a total visionary and an absolute pleasure to work with. We’re super stoked with the result.”

Catch HighSchool at Shacklewell Arms in London on November 10th, and check out their new single below.
