Los Angeles based duo High Places have spoken about their love for home recording.
Hailing from Brooklyn, High Places released their startling debut album in 2008. Self-titled, it’s mixture of folk influenced songcraft and DIY recording gave it a uniquely un-nerving atmosphere.
Taking production into their own hands, the duo are set to return shortly with their new album ‘High Places vs Mankind’. This time, though, High Places have become more adept in the studio with material said to be “more direct”.
Speaking exclusively to ClashMusic singer Rob Barber revealed that the duo retained control of the sound on their new album. For the first record,” he revealed, “we were always scrapbooking every little peep that the two of us made around the house – any kind of weird sound, anything odd.”
“We’d have little jam sessions where we’d sit down with a banjo and we’d make these little snippets and randomly put them together. But I think with the new record, we wanted it to be not so ramshackle, but a little bit more direct”.
Continuing, High Places revealed that the popularity of the first record forced them to re-evaluate how their material works in the live environment.
“For me, at least, one of the big issues was being able to have it more playable live. But we also didn’t just want to create the same thing again. We wanted to force ourselves to work in different ways.”
