Vodka brand in court case

An unusual court case has erupted after a vodka brand using the name and image of Jimi Hendrix was sued by the late guitarist’s estate.

Jimi Hendrix remains a towering influence on anyone who picks up a guitar. His death in 1970 robbed the world of one of its brightest young musical talents, but his legacy lives on.

The Hendrix estate is run by the company Experience Hendrix, controlled by the guitar player’s step-sister Janie. The musician’s half-brother Leon was excluded from the estate, and in response launched the vodka.

The alcoholic drink was a joint venture between Leon Hendrix and his friend Craig Dieffenbach, a Seattle based businessman.

A long running court battle ensued after Experience Hendrix attempted to shut production down, citing a violation of copyright. A court hearing last year saw the guitarist’s estate emerge triumphant, and production of the vodka was shut down.

Another court hearing was arranged for this month, but before this could take place the vodka company offered to pay Experience Hendrix a total amount of $3.2 million.

The agreement was approved by the court last week.
