Heartworms has shared icy new alt-pop wonder ‘Extraordinary Wings’.
The songwriter’s early work felt adjacent to the post-punk nexus, while containing a character of its own. Recognising this comparison, Heartworms has ripped up the rulebook for her debut album, working with producer Dan Carey on a mosaic of alt-pop ideas.
Take new single ‘Extraordinary Wings’. The dark tinges of her potent early work remain, but Heartworms steers this in another direction.
A song of defiance but also restraint – “I don’t wish murder / Cause I got no right” – ‘Extraordinary Wings’ is a marker of her incoming album.
“With my EP, people kind of pigeonholed me into post-punk,” she says. “I was like, ‘Cool, I can do that, but I can also do way more’ – I can do post-punk, but I can also be poppy and catchy, and this album represents that. I think people might be surprised when they hear it.”
