Happy Mondays bass player Paul Ryder has died.
The Manchester musician was a key figure in the evolution of the band – indeed, it could be argued that he supplied the musical core. Locking into a groove with drummer Gary Whelan, the two would interpolate house and club influences into a post-punk framework, arguably shifting the axis of British music in the process.
The brother of vocalist Shaun, the pair’s relationship had its ups and downs, but when on form the Happy Mondays could scarcely be beaten. Later forming his own Big Arm project – who successfully toured alongside Stone Roses’ vocalist Ian Brown – he then re-joined Happy Mondays in 2017.
Sadly, news has now broken that Paul Ryder has died suddenly. In a Facebook post, the Ryder family confirmed his passing, asking that their privacy be respected. No cause of death was given.
The statement reads:
“The Ryder family and Happy Mondays band members are deeply saddened and shocked to say that Paul Ryder passed away this morning.”
“A true pioneer and legend. He will be forever missed. We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time.”
