Hannah Georgas Talks New Video ‘Evelyn’

Canadian singer opens up to Clash...

Hannah Georgas released her third album ‘For Evelyn’ in June as an ode to her 98 year old grandmother Evelyn. The singer's new video 'Evelyn' is a stylish offering of perfect symmetry and brutalist architecture directed by Sammy Rawal who has created videos for fellow Canadian artists Metric and The New Pornographers as well as Disclosure collaborators AlunaGeorge.

Georgas is more well known in her native Canada then on these shores having been nominated for four JUNO awards celebrating the best in Canadian music. However shows at Great Escape festival in Brighton next May should acquaint us Brits with her sweeping electro-pop. We talked to Georgas about her new music video and the inspiration behind it’s strong visual aesthetic.

What is the concept behind the video? The visual symmetry and architecture goes very well with the song’s sound is that what you were aiming for?
The song is about trying to get to a place where you can acknowledge your own fears and insecurities and face them. I believe that this is a lifelong journey. I sent Sammy Rawal an email about a simple idea I had of shooting me dancing really hard and confidently for this track. I wanted to work with him because we had such a blast working together on my last single [‘Don’t Go’, the first single from ‘For Evelyn]. Sammy took things further using his aesthetic and approach. He wanted to shoot the video on the rooftop of the TIFF Lightbox in Toronto because he loved how urban and eccentric it looked. The rooftop has an incredible view of the city and you almost feel like you're in another world when you're up there. He envisioned an army of Hannah clones marching confidently through an urban labyrinth.

Your jacket in the video is amazing – where is it from? Is there a story behind the purchase?
We found the jacket at Urban Outfitters! Sammy sent over a photo of a jacket that was very similar that inspired him and we went on a hunt trying to find it.

The orange stands out against the grey background – was this on purpose? What were you trying to represent?
It was on purpose. He wanted my wardrobe to pop amongst the neutral and minimal architecture. Standing out amongst the grey landscape is definitely meant to be symbolic and matches the emotional content of the song. The pop of colour represents stimulation and creativity.

The contrast between the colours of the jacket – orange and black – are they meant to represent anything specific?
The original idea was to stick with the orange coat. I thought it was super cool that it was reversible so we played around with switching things up to add contrast. That came about on set when we were playing around.

Are there any music videos that influenced the making of ‘Evelyn’?
I sent Sammy three videos that I really love and inspired me:
