Guided By Voices are set to be the subject of a memorable new tribute album.
Founded in 1983, Guided By Voices were buoyed by the ‘song a day’ talent of Robert Pollard. Becoming a genuine cottage industry, the band’s post-REM scrawl turned them into cult heroes.
Splitting in 1999, Guided By Voices recently reformed to play a special series of shows. The band were amongst the highlights at record label Matador’s recent 21st birthday party in Las Vegas.
Now the band’s back catalogue is set to be given a twist by a varied cast of collaborators. A tribute album has been arranged, featuring some of the finest underground rock groups in the United States.
Guided By Voices will be covered by the likes of Vivian Girls’ Katy Goodman, Cymbals Eat Guitars and more. TwentyFourBit has confirmed the entire tracklisting, featuring some tantalising propositions.
Flaming Lips are due to cover ‘Smothered In Hugs’ while Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore has re-worked ‘Stabbing A Star’. The track has been released before, on a previous Guided By Voices tribute album.
Other contributions include an effort from of Montreal singer James Husband, who has covered ‘Buzzards And Dreadful Crows’. Elsewhere, Western Civilisation, Sorry About Dresden and more take part.
Set to be released in early 2011, the new Guided By Voices tribute album will also contain a bonus EP. Available as a digital download only release, the EP features contributions from Marie Stella, Free Electric State, Gregg Yeti and Mass Solo Revolt.
