Grizzly Bear songwriter Daniel Rossen is set to release his new EP ‘Silent Hour / Golden Mile’ on March 19th.
And so, the long wait for new Grizzly Bear material stretches on…
The Brooklyn group have been largely silent since 2009’s ‘Veckatimest’, an album that won praise from all quarters. Now songwriter Daniel Rossen has surprised fans by confirming plans to release a solo EP.
Sketching out new material, Rossen quickly realised that the songs he was writing did not sit in the Grizzly Bear format. Deciding to focus on a solo project, the songwriter began recording material in studios and rehearsal spaces across New York.
Using the methodology of ‘first take, best take’ Daniel Rossen took his time to piece together ‘Silent Hour / Golden Mile’. “Whenever possible, I like just keeping the very first impression of an idea, the first take of something. You very rarely get to do that because the recording quality is below standard,” he said recently. “It’s very liberating to just leave it.”
Inspired by the lengthy touring Grizzly Bear endured after the success of ‘Veckatimest’ the new EP was apparently a way for Daniel Rossen to re-gain focus. Another press quote: “When you spend so much time touring around, you can lose perspective on what you’re trying to do. All the sudden, I had no idea what to do or what to make or anything. These songs were a way for me to figure that out again, getting my legs back.”
