Hugely popular Californian punk outfit Green Day are set to stream their new album ’21st Century Breakdown’.
Green Day have always had an interest in politics. The Californian punk scene from which they spawned is steeped in rebel chic, while the band’s primary influences The Clash and Stiff Little Fingers were famous for their activism.
However little had been heard in their music until 2004’s ‘American Idiot’. A blast against American neo-Conservatism, the album’s President baiting single was a stunning hit and sent the group flying back into the mainstream.
Finding themselves as a global talking point, the band blended Liberal politics with tub-thumping anthems. Green Day were transformed into one of the most vital (and best selling) bands on the planet in an instant, revelling in their status as the presidents of young America.
Five years on and the band are set to return with their eagerly anticipated new album ’21st Century Breakdown’. A concept album just like its predecessor, the record follows two lovers as they try to escape from the shackles of the United States.
However the album’s grim tone is suddenly at odds with the mood of the Western World. A progressive African-American sits in the White House, while the credit crunch has given us all something more immediate to worry about.
