Green Day’s musical ‘American Idiot’ is set to head over to the UK for a nationwide run.
In commercial terms, Green Day are one of the defining rock groups of the past decade. Enormously popular, the band’s stadium punk tapped into a well of resentment against American Republican politics.
Working with theatre producers, Green Day decided to turn their output into a musical. ‘American Idiot’ was given its Broadway debut in 2010, winning two Tony Awards as well as the Grammy for ‘Best Musical Show’.
However debate over the merits of the musical remain. A successful crossover or sheer hubris? British audiences will be able to make up their mind after Green Day confirmed plans to take ‘American Idiot’ across the Atlantic.
Featuring the Stateside cast, ‘American Idiot’ will receive its British première at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre on October 9th 2012.
Heading out on tour, other venues confirmed to host ‘American Idiot’ include Edinburgh Playhouse, Glasgow’s Clyde Auditorium, Manchester’s Palace Theatre and more.
Ending with a run at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, the musical includes choreography by British Olivier Award-winner Steven Hoggett, and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Pulitzer Prize-winner Tom Kitt.
“We’re excited to be bringing the US stage production of American Idiot to the UK and Ireland,” said Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. “We played to some of the most insane crowds when we toured the album there, and we can’t wait for our friends across the pond to see the musical.”
Tickets for the musical go on sale at 10am this Friday (December 9th).
