American millionaire punks Green Day have entered the world of fashion, with the group’s Mike Dirnt designing a special vegan brand of trainer.
Green Day are unlikely fashion icons. As old school punks they stand against the trends of modern music and hark back to a time when punk stood for three chords and the truth, delivered by sturdy men with big boots.
Sure, Billie Joe Armstrong’s black shirt and red tie combo has been copied by many a hipster, but at heart the group remain true to the principles that first caught their attention when sneaking into punk clubs in Los Angeles.
However the group are set to enter into the world of fashion with an unusual new product. Green Day’s Mike Dirnt has designed a new trainer in collaboration with vegan shoe manufacturers Macbeth.
Entirely black, the trainer is a high top and recalls a ferocious punk boot. Containing brass lace loops, the shoe is black and is made from absolutely no animal products.
Strangely, Mike Dirnt is not actually a vegetarian or vegan himself. The musician has been nominated for Peta2’s, the youth branch of the PETA animal rights charity, ‘Sexiest Vegetarian’ award numerous times.
However those nominations have clearly ignored the fact that Dirnt is the co-owner of the meat eater-friendly Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe in Emeryville, California. The cafe is named after a song by The Clash, one of Green Day’s primary influences.
Green Day recently released their new album ’21st Century Breakdown’. A three part concept album, the record split fans and critics. Released five years after the hugely successful ‘American Idiot’ the album recalls its hectoring political tone, but arguably lacks the previous album’s sense of drama.

Green Day are due to release three songs from the new album as a pack for the ‘Rock Band’ computer game. ’21 Guns’, previous single ‘Know Your Enemy’ and ‘East Jesus Nowhere’ will be available to play on the Harmonix game.
Green Day will release a Rock Band pack on July 7th.
