Graham Coxon Solo Album

Blur star takes folk direction

Blur guitarist Graham Coxon is due to release his new album ‘The Spinning Top’ on May 11th.

Now signed to Transgressive Records, Graham Coxon has been busy of late. As well as rehearsing with the reformed Blur, Coxon also worked extensively on Pete Doherty’s solo effort ‘Grace / Wastelands’.

Graham Coxon is apparently set to take a folk direction on his new album. The guitarist has recruited cult songwriter Robyn Hitchcock for the new album, and will also be joined by legendary bassist Danny Thompson.

Thompson’s jazz style has become an iconic motif in folk music, with the musician’s CV including Nick Drake, John Martyn and supergroup Pentangle.

In a statement Graham Coxon said “the album is mainly an acoustic journey although there is, of course, some explosive electric guitar action.”

“I wanted to show how exciting acoustic instruments can be, how dynamic and rich and heart-thumpingly raw they can sound at a time when acoustic music seems either too cute or too soppy. Obvious influences here are the amazing Martin Carthy, the late, great Davey Graham and the late, great John Martyn”.

In addition to this the songwriter revealed that the album’s fifteen tracks will mark out the journey of a character from birth to death. Ambitious stuff, with a supporting cast set to include a “Medea-like enchantress”.

Graham Coxon releases his new album ‘The Spinning Top’ on May 11th.
