Eccentric songwriter Graham Coxon has slated the United States in a new interview, claiming he wants the nation to “start again”.
As a member of Blur, Graham Coxon helped to forge the notion of ‘Britpop’. Establishing a lineage which moved from The Kinks to Madness the group eschewed American remixes from something home grown.
Of course, it all went a bit Stateside alt rock for 1997’s ‘Blur’ but Graham Coxon’s love / hate relationship with American remains.
In a new video for Instigate Debate the guitarist talks with Pete Doherty, with the pair bouncing ideas off one another. Asked about the role of America in global politics, Graham Coxon revealed that he had some extreme views.
“Part of me wants to kind of clear America like an old overgrown field that needs the stubble burning and start again,” he said.
“Just keep all the nice Americans somewhere while we do it. I think there’ll be a lot less oxygen being used, a lot less greenhouse gasses.”
Continuing, Graham Coxon claimed that he hoped pushing the United States to one side would be of benefit to the world. “That’s my little dream fantasy, that they have no importance in the world, they’re not some sort of power, they think they’re policing the world, and we can actually get back to how it used to be when us and Persia were good mates.”
Meanwhile Pete Doherty slated media mogul Rupert Murdoch. “Why would anyone want to own all that, it’s a bit perverse,” he explained.
“Writing shit about me and my house, saying I’ve got a smelly house. Which I do. It’s my business. Why don’t you use the money for some cleaners and solve the problem?”
