Damon Albarn has revealed that Gorillaz could release their new album before Christmas.
It’s been a big year for Gorillaz. Returning with their collaboration heavy new album ‘Plastic Beach’ the band suddenly seemed like an international concern, enjoying success far beyond Britain.
Touring to acclaim across the United States, Gorillaz are ironically enjoying the success which evaded Blur for over a decade.
Headlining Glastonbury, Gorillaz have watched as their audience figures creep up. Crafting an engaging new live show, the cartoon collective could be set for a quickfire return if Damon Albarn has his way.
Speaking to the NME, Damon Albarn claimed to have completed the band’s new album on his iPad. “I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I’ve made a completely different kind of record,” he said. “It’s ironic, being the sort of technophobe and Luddite that I am.”
The band’s new material was recording “in hotel rooms across America” and as a consequence has a much more Trans-Atlantic feel than Blur. “It sounds like an English voice that has been put through the vocoder of America,” he said.
“More American-sounding than Blur … I’m going to try and put it out before Christmas.”
Meanwhile, Damon Albarn is still adjusting to the band’s star studded live show. Guests on ‘Plastic Beach’ include Mark E Smith and Kano, with Gorillaz determined to remain anything but predictable.
“Everyone gets on really well, which is ridiculous really, if you think about the logistics,” Albarn said. “Lou Reed and Kano and Bashy and Bobby Womack all hanging out together.”
Meanwhile, Damon Albarn has another project nestling at the planning stages. “I’m doing something next year about a subject that’s really close to my heart,” Albarn told the NME. “I’m not telling you what it is.”
Gorillaz have not confirmed details of their new album.
