Gorillaz ‘Not Breaking Up’

Internet rumours dismissed

Gorillaz are not breaking up, with Damon Albarn dismissing recent internet based rumours.

With their third album ‘Plastic Beach’ Gorillaz finally conquered the United States. The cartoon collective were able to push their way into the mainstream, with a live show rapidly gaining in muscle.

However this success has made the band vulnerable. American gossip websites have reported frequently on Gorillaz, with their loose knit nature meaning that reports of a possible split soon generated.

People Magazine recently reported that the group were set to split, after a series of acrimonious rows. A source said: “There’s been a massive argument that has basically ended things. Jamie’s gone abroad to be with his girlfriend, while Damon is busy with his opera and with the return of Blur. For now, it looks like it could be the end of Gorillaz.”

No idea who the source is / was. However in a brief statement Gorillaz have informed Pitchfork that they have absolutely no intentions to split up: “Despite rumours to the contrary, Gorillaz are alive and well and misbehaving in London W10.”

Yet the rumours do touch on an important point. Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett both have well established careers outside of Gorillaz, with the pair apparently working on a possible new opera.

This, combined with solo projects and a possible Blur re-union means that Gorillaz may have to take time off. Recently issuing an album recorded on tour, the cartoon collective are alternately rumoured to be getting ready for a break or working on a feature length animated movie.

However we’ll leave the final word to the band’s spokesperson: “Despite rumours to the contrary, Gorillaz are alive and well and misbehaving in London W10.”
